Environment and sustainability

The MNACTEC is working towards optimisation and efficient resource management, incorporating environmental sustainability in its activities

The National Science and Technology Museum of Catalonia (MNACTEC) is working towards optimisation and efficient resource management, incorporating environmental sustainability as a priority in developing its activities.

This commitment to the environment is one of the central strands of the Museum's social responsibility project, and takes the form of an internal environmental management and energy-saving system, developing a series of measures to reduce the negative impact of the institution's activities on the environment.

The MNACTEC holds a number of environmental seals of quality which vouch for its initiatives in this sphere.

Seals of quality

  • Seal of Guaranteed Environmental Quality - Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia.
  • Biosphere Sustainability Commitment" seal of guaranteed quality and sustainability in tourism services.

Initiatives

Use of shared electric car. The MNACTEC has an electric vehicle under the car-sharing system courtesy of the Som Mobilitat cooperative. This electric car is used by Museum workers for their professional transportation.

Electric vehicle charging point. The Museum has two electric vehicle charging points in its car park, which are free to use for visitors. There are also a further two points for internal use: at the Museum's storage facilities in Cervera and inside the Museum itself.

Waste management. The Museum has increased the control and efficiency of waste management in public spaces, as well as specific types of waste in administrative areas, the catering workshop, maintenance, exhibition materials, activities, and office and communications IT.

Energy savings. The MNACTEC is undertaking initiatives to reduce regular electrical consumption, such as the partial installation of heat insulation on the building's roof, automatic light and air heater switches, replacement of energy-intensive lights with LED or energy-efficient alternatives, the installation of timed pushbutton taps at washbasins, alongside other changes.
