MNACTEC reopens after 11 months of building work

The Museum has improved its climate control, exhibition areas and visitor experience

Catalan Minister of Culture Sònia Hernández will this afternoon presided over the reopening ceremony at the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (MNACTEC), which will tomorrow be reopening to the public after being closed for 11 months to undertake major improvement works. The event will also be attended by the Mayor of Terrassa, Jordi Ballart, and the MNACTEC Director, Albert Tulleuda.

During this period the Museum has undertaken climate control and energy efficiency work on the facilities, refurbished the exhibition areas and made a number of other improvements to enrich the visitor experience.

Climate control and energy efficiency
The improvements to energy efficiency and climate control included the installation of a new air-source climate control system and LED lighting, automated ventilation, photovoltaic panels and AI systems to manage climate control and lighting, along with improvements to the storerooms and fire protection. A total of 4.29 million euros was invested, financed under the PIREP programme with Next Generation in funds.

New exhibitions
During the period, the MNACTEC was hard at work refreshing its exhibition offering with three new temporary exhibitions:

  • “Robots. From da Vinci's automata to the humanoids of the future”: the exhibition allows visitors to discover, understand and experience the history, evolution and uses of robotics in the service of society. A selection of nearly 70 robots invites reflections on the challenges raised by robotics and the opportunities offered to transform the future.

  • “Ultrasound: from nature to medicine”: produced by the Radiology Department of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, the exhibition explains what ultrasound is, and shows its numerous diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the field of health.

  • “VIVA Montesa”: this exhibition has been renewed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the marque, taking visitors on a journey through the history of one of the most iconic companies in the motorcycle industry of Catalonia and Spain.

The renewal of the museum's spaces also included the creation of a new exhibition area focused on “The Vapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover factory”, a new space which will feature a rotating display of objects from the collection in the entrance lobby, and a new audiovisual space focusing on the Museum's collections.

Improvements for visitors
Physical and visual accessibility improvements were conducted during the shutdown in various parts of the Museum, in particular the Enérgeia exhibition. The visitor route has also been redesigned, with a new starting point to showcase the Vapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover factory, and two complementary tours available. These initiatives go hand-in-hand with new signage to help guide visitors, as well as an expansion of the book and gift shop area.
