The National Science and Technology Museum of Catalonia (mNACTEC) has begun using a shared electric vehicle through the cooperative Som Mobilitat. The electric car will be used by museum employees for professional travel, and is located in the mNACTEC car park.
The vehicle is for the exclusive use of the mNACTEC from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Outside these times any Som Mobilitat user may use the vehicle, which can be booked via the cooperative's website or app.
This marks mNACTEC's entry into the car sharing system for private transport, managed by an organisation to provide a group of individuals with shared use of a fleet of cars. Shared cars promote rational car use to achieve more sustainable mobility in cities.
Staff had previously used a petrol-engined car owned by the mNACTEC when travelling. The move represents a shift towards car sharing and electric vehicles in line with the museum's commitment to the environment and sustainability, fostered by the mNACTEC social responsibility programme and the Biosphere responsible tourism scheme.
The initiative goes hand-in-hand with the installation in 2019 of electric vehicle charging points in the mNACTEC car park, at the Asland Cement Museum in Castellar de n’Hug (a mNACTEC site) and the mNACTEC storage facilities in Cervera.
