Publication: "From Small Workshop to Great Factory"

An account of the evolution of industrial buildings in the 18th and 19th centuries in Catalonia

The Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (MNACTEC) has published the work From Small Workshop to Great Factory, by the Doctor of Architecture and University Professor Ramon Gumà. The presentation took place on Wednesday, 22 April, within the context of the events to celebrate Catalonia's national day, St George's Day.

Published jointly by the Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia and Rafael Dalmau Editor, the work presents an overview of the evolution of the form and construction of industrial buildings in the 18th and 19th centuries in Catalonia, with a particular emphasis on the textile industry, which was at the forefront of the process of industrialisation.

The study, divided into three key periods, aims to provide a perspective on the evolution of buildings used for labour and production (manufacturing facilities and later factories), and their adaptation to changing needs during the most decisive period of industrialisation.

This is the fourth edition in the Industrial Heritage Topics collection, and in this case the book tells the story of the transition from small manufacturing buildings to industrial edifices, up to the creation of factory complexes.
