The National Science and Technology Museum of Catalonia (mNACTEC) received the "Biosphere 2017 Sustainability Commitment" mark for guaranteeing the quality and sustainability of tourism services. The accolade is awarded by the Barcelona Provincial Authority, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Institute of Responsible Tourism, and has been handed out to 245 companies and services in the Barcelona region.
The same seal of approval has been bestowed on three museums belonging to the mNACTEC Territorial Structure: the Asland Cement Museum in Castellar de n’Hug, the Manresa Technology Museum, and the Cercs Mines Museum.
The awards ceremony was held on 13 March at the Casa Llotja de Mar in Barcelona, hosted by the President of the Barcelona Provincial Authority, Mercè Conesa; the President of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Miquel Valls, and the President of the Institute of Responsible Tourism, Tomás Azcárate.
"Biosphere Sustainability Commitment" mark
The mark aims to extend a culture of tourism sustainability among companies and tourism services in the districts of Barcelona. The programme has been developed by the Barcelona Provincial Authority with the support of the Institute of Responsible Tourism, the main purpose being to instil more sustainable management across all agents at a tourism destination.
The Barcelona Provincial Authority has therefore, together with the Institute of Responsible Tourism and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, promoted a methodology to guarantee the quality and sustainability of public and private tourism services at destinations. A methodology which serves to acquire sufficient skills for the sustainability of such tourism services, closely tied in with the different tourism services in the Barcelona region. By voluntarily signing up to the scheme, the tourism services involved are awarded the "Biosphere Sustainability Commitment" mark, which is renewable yearly.
