The Terres de l’Ebre region, made up of the Ribera d’Ebre, Terra Alta, Baix Ebre and Montsià districts, has suffered depopulation over recent decades. While the area was historically focused on agriculture, mechanisation and industrialisation change its economy and relationship with the River Ebre. The railway system includes lines such as Tarragona-Valencia, Reus-Zaragoza and Val de Zafán, which have left behind substantial architectural heritage, despite their deteriorated state.
A recent inventory revealed that the active lines are in worse condition than those now inactive, with small stations being particularly affected. Bridges and tunnels are essential to overcome the local geography, but the lack of maintenance has led to more rapid deterioration. This study proposes the restoration of the abandoned lines for tourist use, and improvements to those currently in operation to strengthen connectivity. A good practice guide has been drawn up to preserve this heritage. Conservation and reuse could revitalise the region, improving quality of life and lending new cultural and social value to the railway infrastructure.
