The first washing machines were developed in the late 18th century and gradually improved throughout the 19th century, always as appliances used by a minority.
This early-20th century washing machine built by Filip Mafrans follows the design pattern of the manual washing machines of the 19th century which were wooden and bucket-shaped. However, this example is already powered by a small external electrical motor. When the laundry was being done extreme care had to be taken to keep the motor dry and prevent it from breaking down.
