Iron Pyrenees European Project

The project will invest 2.1 million euros in promoting tourism in the settings and heritage relating to iron

On 18 May the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC), representing its Palau Forge branch in Ripoll, met in Campdevànol with the two administrations that are part of the Iron Pyrenees -Network of municipalities of iron for a joint sustainable heritage tourism strategy (POCTEFA PYRFER) European Project to mark the start of the project.

Between 2018 and 2020 ten French and Catalan administrations will invest 2.1 million euros in the project in order to promote tourism in the settings and heritage relating to iron. Through a joint action from Ripoll Town Council and mNACTEC the project is set to invest around 100,000 euros in the improvement of the infrastructures of the Palau Forge in Ripoll.

The governing council was constituted in the meeting, with representatives from the ten administrations involved: the town councils of Campdevànol ―the administration heading the project―, Ripoll, Besalú, Alins, Alpens and Arles Sur Tech; Syndicat Mixte Canigó Grand Site; Communauté d'Agglomération Pays Foix Varilhes; Communauté de Communes de la Haute Ariège and Communauté des Communes Haut Vallespeir.

Several axes of action have been set up in order to develop this project:

  • Promotion of the project
  • Organisation of festivals and activities for the promotion of iron tourism
  • Public investment for the creation of centres relating to iron heritage to attract tourists/visitors
  • Personal exchanges between the two participating territories (Catalonia and France)
  • Transferability of the project beyond 2020
