New feature on the Coma Cros factory on Canal MNACTEC

The textile factory helped shift the town of Salt from agriculture to industry

The information platform Canal MNACTEC run by the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (MNACTEC) has released a new feature focusing on the Coma Cros factory in Salt. Coma Cros (1850-1995), alongside the other textile factories set up in Salt alongside the Monar irrigation channel, helped to shift the town from agriculture to industry.

The feature, which forms part of the Canal MNACTEC "Manufacturing Imprints" series, reveals the factory's history courtesy of Jaume Prat, a local historian from Salt, and Lluïsa Grabulleda, a former worker at Coma Cros.

The factory began manufacturing cotton ribbons, before later producing the handkerchiefs, sheets and bedspreads which made it commercially successful. Coma Cros transformed not only the landscape of Salt but also its demographics, as it grew from a village of just over 300 inhabitants to more than 2,500 in half a century.
