Àreu Sawmill restores its waterwheel

The new part was restored thanks to a contribution by the mNACTEC

The Àreu Sawmill started up its waterwheel during July, following recent restoration and optimisation. The part was restored with funding from the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC), as the sawmill forms part of the mNACTEC Regional Structure, a network of 27 museums and heritage sites explaining the industrialisation of Catalonia.

The restored waterwheel can be seen in operation at the sawmill during the demonstrations conducted while the site is open to the public on weekends in July and every day in August.

Initial work was conducted in 2019 to restore the timber channel, featured in a video. Over the course of 2020 and 2021 the plan is to make further investments intended to improve safety measures and visitor access at the sawmill.

July also saw the release of the publication Ruta: La Serradora d’Àreu, a foldout plan featuring nearby sites of tourist interest, published as part of the collection Guies i rutes dels museus del Sistema Territorial del mNACTEC.
