70 photographs of the former Asland factory added

Rafel Freixa has donated negatives of the factory from before it was acquired by the Catalan Autonomous Government in 1996

The National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (MNACTEC) has added to its photography collection a set of 70 monochrome photographic negatives printed on plastic and dating from 1984, depicting the former Asland cement factory at Clot del Moro, in Castellar de n’Hug. The inclusion of this material within the MNACTEC archive was made possible thanks to a donation by the photographer himself, Rafel Freixa.

The photographs show the former Asland cement factory in a state of abandonment, before it was acquired by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia in 1996 to be converted into a museum. The former factory is now home to the Castellar de n’Hug Cement Museum, a MNACTEC site.

The images reveal some parts that no longer exist, and serve to identify certain architectural aspects helping to interpret the production process at the factory.

The set of photographs is made up of images of the outside of the factory, a number of indoor spaces, details and the chimney, as well as images of the Clot del Moro Residence, the engineers' housing and the Civil Guard post.

The Cement Museum

The former Asland cement factory, at the Clot del Moro site in the borough of Castellar de n'Hug, was in operation from 1904 until 1975. The remains visible today still reveal the spectacular nature of one of the most outstanding manufacturing complexes of Catalan industrialisation, standing within a unique natural setting.

The complex now forms a part of the MNACTEC, as home to the Castellar de n’Hug Cement Museum, which opened in 2002. In 2005 the factory and its environs were declared a Site of National Cultural Interest in the historical monument category. A visit to the museum offers an insight into the impressive elements that still remain of this industrial complex, erected by a group of industrialists in the early 20th century.
