The book offers an insight into the evolution of buildings used for work and production/manufacturing, and the subsequent factories, and their adaptation to changing contemporary needs during the most decisive period of industrialisation.

The publication has a three-part structure: economic momentum in the 18th century and the initial mechanisation of labour; the industrial transformation of the 18th century and second mechanisation; and the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, with the considerable growth of industrial colonies and facilities.
