The cyclostyle or copier was used at the beginning of the 20th century as a tool to produce paper copies in large numbers, and was especially used in school. The Gestetner company was the biggest seller and distributor of this product worldwide. These machines were fully manual and used a type of paper known as stencil paper.

Over the years these were perfected and an electric system added, and evolved towards the commercialisation of the photocopier as we know it today.
