New exhibition: “Pere Català i Pic”

The exhibition recovers the visual memory of one of the most important Catalan photographers

Until 30th August 2017, The National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC) is holding the exhibition “Pere Català i Pic [modernity and technology]”, which recovers the visual memory of one of the most important Catalan photographers of the twentieth century, Pere Català i Pic.

The exhibition includes 35 reproductions of works by the photographer as well as 14 original pieces from his archive, several of his personal belongings (a camera, personal journals, negatives and formulae for developing, and cuttings from newspapers of the time) as well as an audiovisual documentary on his life and work recorded by specialist researchers.

The exhibition, curated by Pablo Giori, is divided into two major parts. One of these recovers the extensive work of Pere Català i Pic through a chronological retrospective divided into three major stages, while the other is a reflection on the dialogue between modernity and technology.

His production can be interpreted as a study on aesthetics, advertising and pedagogy both recovering his roots and constructing a project for a modern, industrial and republican society. As can be seen from this exhibition, Pere Català i Pic reflects and records this obsession for modernity and technology in his work, in a dialogue which makes it possible to understand his position as an avant-garde artist as well as a self-taught intellectual.
